Top 5: Goals of the Season 2011-12
But with so many great goals to choose from, which ones take their place amongst the top five for the season?
Let’s take a look:
5. Jonas Gutierrez vs. Wolves
We’ll start off with a rare goal from “spiderman”. The Argentine’s long-range drive comes from February’s 2-2 draw with Wolves.
(Apologies for the video quality)
4. Yohan Cabaye vs. Man Utd
Yohan Cabaye’s free kick against Manchester United was pivotal in Newcastle’s biggest win of the season; a 3-0 victory over the Red Devils. The free kick was perfectly placed in the top left corner, and the deflection off the crossbar just adds to the aesthetics.
(Cabaye’s free kick comes at 1:07)
3. Papiss Cisse vs. Swansea
Papiss Demba Cisse has a wealth of goals to his name that could have made the list, but the first of only two is his off-balance lob against Swansea. The timing and grace of this effort is unbelievable, yet is somehow the norm for the Senegalese striker.
2. Hatem Ben Arfa vs. Bolton
Hatem Ben Arfa’s solo effort against Bolton was a sight to behold, and bore a striking resemblance to another goal against Blackburn in the FA Cup. Ben Arfa effortlessly skipped past the half-hearted defence, before finishing cooly in front of goal.
1.Papiss Cisse vs. Chelsea
There aren’t many people on the planet who can do to a football what Papiss Cisse did against Chelsea in early May. But it wasn’t just the quality of his second goal, it was the context of the goal as well. A big game against the eventual European champions, with a place in the top five on the line, and Cisse comes up with that. Brilliant.
Undoubtedly Newcastle’s goal of the season, and as far as I’m concerned there wasn’t a better goal scored in the country last season either.
What do you think?
