The Rumour Mill – Vurnon Anita
However, there are a handful of players who could benefit from making an immediate move to combat the heartaches of being left out of their respective country’s 23 man squads. One of these players is Ajax’s Vurnon Anita, who was left out of van Marwijk’s Netherlands squad.
Anita fell at the final hurdle after failing to make the transition from the preliminary squad to the final squad. Having played in the struggling Eredivise since 2005, it looks as though his recent frustrations have persuaded Anita to prove himself on a bigger stage that is the Premier League.
Rumours are that the two clubs have agreed a fee of £6m for the player. Capable of operating at left back and defensive midfield, Anita would certainly offer versatility and depth to the Newcastle squad. It is anticipated that he would offer healthy competition with Davide Santon for a place in the back four, whilst providing back up for established midfielder Cheick Tiote.
But what I like most about the player is the winning mentality that has been established during his time at Ajax. The Dutchman has already won seven major trophies at such a young age, proving that he’s used to performing in the big matches – whether that be fighting for a Champions League spot or our clashes with Sunderland. He has also made 28 appearances in Europe throughout his career, suggesting that he could offer invaluable experience once our Europa League campaign gets up and running.
It might appear strange that we’re going for a left sided defender considering the right back position could be vacant if Danny Simpson were to depart. But considering the experience and versatility he has developed at such a young age, £6m could prove to be a steal for Vurnon Anita. Having been left out of his nation’s campaign in Poland/Ukraine, I’m certain the young lad would arrive determined to perform to impress both the Newcastle fans and his country.
