Newcastle look set to swoop for Málaga’s Jérémy Toulalan, with the midfielder being among an array of players being put on the market for a cut down price by the cash strapped La Liga side.
Despite the initial injection of cash into the Spanish club, the Dubai based owners have built up a huge financial debt which meant that the players weren’t paid in mid-July. The consequences of Málaga’s reckless spending serves to emphasise just how well the Toon have done to build a strong squad with a relatively low transfer kitty at our disposal.
As a result, the France international is available for a fraction of the £8 million which Málaga paid to sign the player from Lyon a year ago. The 28 year old is renowned for selflessly protecting the back four in the holding midfield position, with his vast experience meaning that he’s one of the best at it in the game.
Toulalan also has quite a few trophies to his name, having won two league titles and three domestic cups during his time at Lyon. Considering that he hasn’t won any silverware for four years, the Frenchman must be hungry for success.
Some of you may be questioning whether we need to sign Toulalan, as it looks as though Cheik Tiote will remain at St James’ Park this season. Both are very good players and it would be a waste of talent if either didn’t receive adequate playing time. However, if we are to go on a sustained run in one of the domestic cups and also compete in the Europa League, reinforcements are desperately needed in this transfer window.
The holding midfielder has also been linked with a move back to Lyon. Having spent the best years of his career at Stade de Gerland, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him return. However, Newcastle’s French contingent would mean that Toulalan wouldn’t feel completely alienated by a move to Tyneside.
Despite already having a very good defensive midfielder in Cheik Tiote, I still feel we should swoop for Toulalan. He would be available for significantly lower than his deserved value, and we must consider the increase in the number of games next season. One thing’s for sure, we should be very proud that the club are being linked with players of this quality and reputation.
