Newcastle in bid for Wayne Rooney?!

I do enjoy laughing at an unlikely rumour on occasion. But this is just insulting: "Newcastle United are preparing a shock bid for want-away Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney", according to Mike Ashley's Sports Direct news website.

SportsDirect News has apparently learned of early contact between the club’s officials and Rooney’s agent over a potential move.

The striker, who handed in a transfer request last week to the Manchester United management, is apparently desperate to leave. But whether Newcastle United are the club he had in mind is another question.

A source close to the negotiations told Sports Direct News:

“Newcastle see Wayne as their ideal player.

“He’s a strong centre-forward, would relate to the fans and would be a massive boost to the club’s brand name.

“Low-level conversations have already been held between Newcastle and Rooney’s agent, though the two clubs haven’t spoken directly yet.”

The Magpies have been interested in Rooney before, and were the first club to make a move for the fresh-faced (maybe not) starlet back in 2004. They tabled a £20 million bid for him when he was at Everton – though the then 18-year-old snubbed a move to the Toon in favour of United.

Though the majority of transfer rumours churned out these days have absolutely no substance in them at all, it’s strange to see Mike Ashley’s very own company reporting this news. It’s no secret that the club are pursuing a new striker, but no-one would ever have imagined us dolling out £50 million for one (except perhaps for this SDN journalist!)

Evidently, this is just yet another ridiculous rumour thought up by some desperate down-on-his-luck journalist.

All the same, can you imagine?!

So, what do you make of this ‘rumour’?
