Top 5: Matches of the Season
Compiling a list of Newcastle's top 5 moments has been difficult. They've been few and far between. Here are my suggestions:
5) Manchester United 4-3 Newcastle
Strangely I’m counting this as a highlight. We went and gave Manchester United a game on their own patch and nearly pulled off something spectacular. It was memorable, it was controversial and some lovely football was played. Plus James Perch scored therefore it has to be in my top 5.
4) Metalist Kharkiv 0-1 Newcastle
I’ll never forget this night. The elation when Sissoko was foulled and Shola dispatched was euphoric. It was only one of a few times this season when I was proud to be a Geordie. Shola sending the keeper the wrong way is always a nice sight too.
3) Aston Villa 1-2 Newcastle
Relief. The only word that springs to mind in this game. After the Reading fiasco I was positive we were destined for the drop so when Cisse fired home in the first half and then Cabaye’s was rifled home my fears were eased. Sissoko and Gouffran shone on their debuts.
2) Newcastle 3-2 Chelsea
5 goals. 2 worldies. 52,000 ecstatic geordies. Nuff said. Stunning stuff from Sissoko and co especially when he outpaced Cole in the 2nd half. Jonas header was superb and the atmosphere reminded me why I support NUFC.
1) Newcastle 1-0 Anzhi Makhachkala
The moment Cisse headed home was the minute I dared to dream the impossible. It was euphoric, it was a daze, it was geordie heaven. The atmosphere was superb, the team had done us proud and we were through to the next round. Cisse did it again!
Other notable highlights: Harper crying, Cisse’s winner’s vs Fulham and Stoke, Vurnon Anita vs Brugge, Newcastle 4-2 Southampton and Cisse’s wondergoal.
