The Rumour Mill – Gaston Sauro

It’s no secret that club Captain Fabricio Coloccini is keen to return to his native Argentina, and has wanted to for the past 18 months. It looks likely that his wishes will be granted this Summer, leaving the club short on central defenders.

And in anticipation of this, Newcastle are apparently already beginning their search for a replacement. And Many news outlets have reported that Basel’s Gaston Sauro is the club’s top target.

The 24 year old Joined Basel in 2012 from Boca Juniors and has since gone on to make 24 league appearances for the Swiss club winning the championship last season. He has also had experience in both Champions league and in the Europa League where he has really impressed.

According to Talksport, the Magpies have been tracking the progress of the defender for last few months and have sent scouts to watch him in action on several occasions. They surely must have been impressed with his performances in the last round of Europa league where he did extremely well against Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg.

However, Newcastle will have to compete with La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid who have also joined the hunt to land the Argentine.

It could be a watershed transfer window for the Northeast club where there are expected to be several outgoings and incomings in the summer if the noises are the club are to be believed. The arrival of Sauro will certainly be a welcome addition to the squad and should provide competition to achieve their target for the next season whatever it may be.
