Twitter was abuzz last night reporting that Newcastle, along with Porto and Tottenham, were interested in acquiring the services of the young Spain midfielder.
The 20-year-old midfielder played 29 times for Malaga last season, scoring twice, and is highly regarded in Spain. He starred in Malaga’s 3-1 over Newcastle at the beginning of the month, and even managed to ge this name on the scoresheet, rifling in a wonderful right footed shot from 25 yards out.
Having searched the internet for any evidence of this previously unheard of rumour, the only article I was able to find was one from the well-established, and recognised Spanish news outlet, Futbol Baleur. For our Spanish readers, the article can be found HERE.
Our resident Spaniard has translated the following article:
Following a strong season, teams like Sevilla, Valencia, Villarreal and Tottenham have shown interest in acquiring his services…but the high asking prices have slowed any possibility of an easy transfer away from Malaga. Now, it is reported that a figure of 4.5 million may be able to open doors for the player, although this does depend on Málaga.
The operation is not entirely closed, however, because Newcastle United have also bid for the player.
Now, if this is the only source of evidence for this unanticipated rumour, then it appears that fans have very little to be excited about.
The club have increasingly been linked with a central midfielder over the past few days, and this does come as a surprise. Having already recruited nine quality players this Summer, there aren’t many more spaces to be filled in the team. It is understood that Pardew wants one more marquee signing in the form of a striker, but there appears to be very little progress made on that front.
Over the past few days Cheick Tiote has been linked away from the club, and this could be the reason why Newcastle are (supposedly) after another CM, but that remains to be seen.
