Newcastle Chasing Metz Youth Product

Newcastle United are interested in Metz academy defender Nicolas Basin, who is also gathering interest from Fulham, Schalke 04 and VFL Wolfsburg.

The 17 year old is one of Metz’s most exciting academy prospects and has been compared in France to Bayern Munich’s Austrian left back/midfielder David Alaba. The player has courted interest from all over Europe this season, with scouts regularly spotted in attendance at the Metz Academy matches.

He is said to have a dribbling and crossing ability well beyond his years, and is expected to break through into the first team as early as next season.

Basin has not signed yet a professional contract with Les Grenats and the club management fear that they may well lose one of their prized assets in the coming months. If Newcastle were to approach him, they would only have to pay a small compensation fee for him.

Considering Newcastle’s past ventures in the French market, Tyneside may well prove an attractive detsiantion for the youngster, especially considering our recent dealings with the club. We signed Olivier Kemen from the club in July 2013.
