VIDEO: Former Toon Defender Scores Belter This Weekend

Former Newcastle United defender, James Tavernier, scored an absolute belter this weekend for Rangers in their Petrofac Training Cup final victory over Peterhead.

Starting at full-back, Tavernier, who left Newcastle at the end of last season after a number of seasons out on loan, scored Rangers’ spectacular second goal in a 4-0 victory over their opponents.

With the Scottish heavyweights already holding a 1-0 advantage following an unfortunate Ally Gilchrist own goal, Tavernier put them in a commanding position shortly before the break with a soaring half-volley from 25 yards which crashed into the top corner of the net.

The 46,000 Rangers fans at Hampden Park went absolutely mad, as you can imagine, and it is sure to be one of the prouder career moments for the 24 year-old.

With Rangers already having secured promotion back to the top flight this season, manager Warburton will be wanting to keep ahold of their star player in a bid to reclaim their reputation as one of Scotland’s most feared outfits.

Nonetheless, following the goal, some Toon fans on Twitter were calling for his return to Tyneside, claiming he was never really provided the opportunity he so desperately deserved.

While it would be naive to think his glowing performances for Rangers this season would be easily transferable to the Championship (no point in even pretending we’ll be a PL team next season), he might be considered an option in the market this Summer.

With 14 goals from full-back this year, he obviously has something special in him, so it will be interesting to see if he’s still plying his trade in Glasgow by September.

  1. Sorry why would he want to leave rangers (playing at Ibrox in front of 50k)to come to Newcastle in fizzy PoP league infront of 20k? Might be playing champions league and euro? ……I recons the only chance he would leave rangers is for a big English premier club.why should he take a step down and play for us,good luck to him I say

    • The Championship is a far more competitive and high quality league than the Scottish Second Division. Hell, most Championship teams would storm the SPL. The only question we should be asking here is if he is good enough for us, not whether we are good enough for him.

      • Sorry this kids to good for Newcastle IMO if he had of stayed it would of hampered his development, mark Warburton is a top manager bringing him on well.rangers are playing in Scottish prem next season. Newcastle will be playing his loan clubs shed wed,Rotherham,Bristol city.face it that’s our level now.tabs may be playing Europe or champs footy in a season or so something we can’t offer

  2. Let’s be honest Newcastle fans think they are at the top for some reason….truth is we have struggled in prem 4 seasons ( bar 1 European campaign)…….we are a yoyo championship /struggling prem club …facts

Typical Newcastle …we have a talented winger, let’s send him on loan for experience………then sell him to develop into a class player …I know …..let’s spend 85 mill on average players to help with the relegation chase…..the mind boggles at times.talent coming through needs a better chance .mike Ashley done what most fans wanted spend like the German giants.
