The latest player to be linked with a switch to Newcastle United as we enter ‘silly season’ is none other than young Benfica centre-back Victor Lindelöf.
The Magpies are just one of many sides right across Europe which have been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old Swedish international.
Portuguese outlet DN Desporto believe Newcastle have joined the lengthy list of clubs seeking the defender’s signature. PSG, Roma, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach – to name a few – have also set their sights on the former Västerås SK man.
The past six months have saw Lindelöf’s stock rise considerably, as prior to that he had been no more than a bit-part player. However, an injury to captain Luisão left the door open to the youngster whose performances have earned him rave reviews in the Portuguese media.
In January, it was in fact widely reported Lindelöf was details away from joining rivals Middlesbrough on loan before the deal collapsed. Benfica realised they needed cover and so pulled the plug on the move. What a difference six months make!
There is a €30m release clause in Lindelöf’s contract, a fee which Portuguese daily A Bola say Benfica would have no qualms in demanding after the Swede’s strong convincing performances both at home in Liga NOS as well as in the Champions League.
Physically, he has been a rock in the heart of Benfica’s defence as they recovered from a poor start before embarking on a run of form only matched by Serie A giants Juventus in Europe’s major leagues. His composure with the ball at his feet allied with his strength in the air would make him an excellent addition to the Premier League as well as a potentially fantastic partner for Chancel Mbemba.
Of course, signing players from Benfica is never an easy business as they always demand top dollar for their prized assets, however the early signs are that this boy could prove worthy of every penny in years to come.
